Centennial roughs up Millennium

After playing a one-run game against top-ranked Cactus, Millennium entered the March 16 game against second-ranked Centennial believing it had a good chance of winning.

Centennial quickly dispelled that notion.

The Lady Coyotes scored three times in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to an 11-1 triumph.

Millennium tallied its lone run in the bottom of the second, to close to within 3-1, but it never got any closer.

Centennial tacked on two runs in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

The game was halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“We had opportunities, but didn’t get it done,” coach Derek Drumtra said. “We had runners on base all day and couldn’t come through in the clutch.

“We did a good job of bunting, and we moved runners along with bunts, but couldn’t score them,” he added.

Part of the dearth of runs was attributed to some base-running mistakes, Drumtra said.

Randi Johns led Millennium at the plate with two hits.

Bridgette Stilwell was the starting and losing pitcher. She hurled the first four innings, and gave up nine of Centennial’s 11 runs. Her sister, Hannah, relieved in the fifth and gave up the final two runs.

Britnee Barnett starred in the mound and the plate for Centennial. She was the winning pitcher and went 3-for-3 with a triple.

“They were a very good team,” Drumtra said.

Millennium, which is still on spring break, resumes play at 4 p.m. today against Sunrise Mountain at Rose Mofford Complex in the first round of the Horizon Tournament.
